National Honor Society Information - 2010

Summit NHS Goal
Honor Society becomes whatever we make it. In past years, it has been a massive conglomeration of students participating in a hodge podge of community service activities. This year, we would like to hone participation to more specific areas. Also, though we have a massive group, prestige may still easily be maintained.

Requirements
Community Service hours are the biggest requirement in Nation Honor Society. Two types of hours are available, individual and group.

Group Hours: Group hours are required for everybody. In years past, random community service opportunities have been compiled for everybody to choose from. This year, we are making a slight change. Though these random opportunities will still be available, we are attempting to focus the effort of or group on two organizations: The Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity. It is mandatory that each person log at least one hour in either of these organizations. We hope, however, that people will become invested in such opportunities and return to volunteer multiple times.
You will not be logging your own hours at group hour opportunities. It is required that you check in and check out with the executive council present for they will be recording your hours.
Peer tutoring also counts for group hours. This is the only group hours you will be reporting. You will record these hours and turn them in as you might individual hours.

Individual Hours: Honor Society has no say over what hours you do on your own time. Any Community service is acceptable for these activities. To report such hours, sheets are available in the Counseling Office. You are to turn in the white copy and keep the pink/yellow copy for your own records.

12 total hours must be done. Each person must have 5 group hours, however, if you achieve more, this is not a problem. Individual hours help to fill the rest of the total hour requirement. For instance, if you do 10 hours in group community service, you are only required to have 2 more hours. These can be filled with individual hours.

*We encourage all students to continue doing community service even after the 12 hour minimum has been achieved.

Attendance
It is necessary to attend all meetings (the last Wednesday of every month). It is also necessary to attend the community service event for which you sign up for.

Strikes
The strike system was introduced to keep Honor Society more "honorable." If you receive three strikes, you will be kicked out of Honor Society. Strikes can be accumulated in a number of ways:

  • Not attending meetings
  • Not attending community service events for which you are signed up for

Basically, if you show up, you will probably succeed. Also, if all hours are not done by the end of the semester, Honor Society reserves the right to kick you out.

*Useful information will also be posted on the bulletin board at the beginning of C hall
